I was raised in Los Angeles, CA by a veterinary ophthalmologist. She'd always quiz me on dog breeds on the street and I would fail, but I still learned a lot about animals!

One of the absolute biggest lessons I learned growing up around a veterinary clinic is that animals do not understand what "grooming" is.

To them, being held down and having parts of their body clipped off feels like a legitimate threat to their safety!

The absolute best way to reduce scratches is by making nail trims a low-stress training process, not an Olympic wrestling match.

You have to teach your cat to accept having their paws handled in tiny, manageable steps before you ever actually cut a nail.

Step 1: Train Paw Tolerance (The Desensitization Phase)

Do not just ambush your cat with a pair of clippers! You need to introduce paw touching incredibly gradually. Feline-friendly handling guidelines all stress the importance of "desensitization."

You want to pair the act of touching their paws with incredibly high-value, delicious treats.

• Wait for the right moment: Start when your cat is already deeply relaxed. The best time is right after a fun play session and a good meal, when they are sleepy and happy in a quiet space.

  
  

• The gentle touch: Gently touch and stroke their paws for just a few seconds. The exact second you touch their paw, give them a tiny, highly delicious treat (like a lickable puree treat or a piece of plain boiled chicken). Repeat this daily until your cat thinks paw massages are totally boring and safe!

  
  

• The bean press: Once they allow basic touching, practice gently pressing their paw pad between your thumb and forefinger to make their claws extend. Instantly reward them with a treat! Build this up over multiple, super-short (one minute!) sessions.

  
  

Step 2: Introduce the Scary Tools

Cats are naturally suspicious of weird new metal objects. Before you use the clippers, let your cat thoroughly investigate them.Leave the clippers on the floor near their food bowl so they can sniff them.

Next, try touching the clippers to their paw without cutting anything, rewarding them heavily. You can even squeeze the clippers in the air so they get completely used to the weird "snip" sound without feeling any pressure!

Ditch the Wrestling Match: Safe Restraint Strategies

When it is finally time to actually do the deed, how you hold your cat makes all the difference in the world. You do not need to pin your cat to the floor; you just need to make them feel secure and supported.

Support, Do Not Scruff!

For a very long time, people were taught to grab a cat by the loose skin on the back of their neck (scruffing) to immobilize them.

Please, throw this advice right out the window! Modern feline-handling guidelines strongly discourage routine scruffing. It often makes cats feel completely panicked, strips away their sense of control, and is actually much more likely to provoke aggressive scratching.

Instead, use a gentle, highly supportive hold. Wrap your arm gently over their shoulders, or simply let them stay in their preferred resting position (like sitting up directly on your lap or tucked securely into a cozy cardboard box).

The "Kitty Burrito" Method

If your cat is wiggly, squirmy, but not totally panicked, the towel wrap is your absolute best friend! Veterinarians affectionately call this the "kitty burrito."

Take a thick, soft bath towel and gently wrap it snugly around your cat's body, making sure to secure their back legs so they cannot ninja-kick you.

You can then gently pull out one single paw at a time to work on. The gentle, even pressure of the towel acts like a weighted blanket, helping them feel contained and secure while keeping your bare arms totally safe from flying claws!

The Clipping Technique: Tiny Snips for the Win

Having the right technique is crucial for keeping the peace. If you accidentally hurt your kitty, they will remember it, and the next nail trim will be ten times harder!

Here is exactly how to execute the perfect, painless clip.

Use the Right Tools

Always use sharp, highly specific cat-sized clippers. Do not use human nail clippers! Human nails are flat, while cat claws are round.

Dull or oversized tools will literally crush and splinter your cat's nail instead of cleanly slicing it. Splintering is incredibly uncomfortable for them and will make them hate future trims.

Find the "Quick"

When you gently press the paw pad to extend the claw, look very closely at the nail. You will notice a pink, fleshy core running through the base of the nail.

This is called the "quick," and it is packed with sensitive nerves and blood vessels.

Never cut the quick! If you hit it, it will bleed, and it will hurt your cat tremendously. If your cat has light, translucent nails, the pink quick is very easy to see.

If your cat has dark or black nails, play it incredibly safe and stay very near the curved, hook-like tip of the claw.

Cut Top to Bottom

Always clip only the absolute sharpest tip of the nail. It is always better to take off way too little than to risk hitting the quick!

When you place the clippers around the nail, position them so the blades cut from the top to the bottom of the nail, not from side to side.

Cutting top-to-bottom works with the natural shape of the claw and massively reduces the risk of crushing or splintering the nail.

Read the Room: When to Stop and Call for Backup

As devoted, deeply loving cat guardians, we have to know when to push through and when to completely walk away.

If your cat is growing increasingly agitated, you have to read their body language.

If you see their ears pin flat against their head, their tail thrashing wildly, or if they are actively trying to bite, hiss, or violently escape, stop immediately.

Feline-friendly guidelines tell us that pushing through severe panic drastically increases your risk of getting a nasty scratch.

Worse, it builds a massive negative association in your cat's brain, guaranteeing that the next time you bring out the clippers, they will fight you even harder.

Keep your trimming sessions incredibly short and overwhelmingly positive. End on a massive success, even if that means you only trimmed a single nail today! You can always trim another nail tomorrow.

If your kitty remains highly defensive despite your absolute best training efforts, there is no shame in asking for professional help!

Ask your vet team to do the trims for you, or ask them for an in-person demonstration. Some cats just do much better with a professional groomer or even a little bit of mild, vet-prescribed anti-anxiety medication prior to their pedicure.
